Gene Editing and The CRISPR Technique
Genetic engineering was mainly used in agriculture and medicine in the 1970s and 1980s. In agriculture, genetically modified crops were made by editing genes. Gene editing techniques gave people massive crops, more nutrition in crops, and more convenience to grow them giving them such things as pest resistance and reducing the amount of need for large amounts of fertilizer. In medicine, genetic engineering contributes to produce synthetic insulin and modified growth hormones for Achondroplasia (congenital dwarfism) treatment.
CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats)
CRISPR is a gene editing technology which enables scientists to add, remove, or insert specific segments of DNA. This technique has been applied for an antiviral treatment, inhibition of mosquitoes reproductions, genetic disorder treatment, and organ transplant from other species to humans. CRISPR is associated with an enzyme, Cas9 which cleaves a targeted DNA part. The CRISPR technique has a possible problem that affects future generations. When the germ line which functions to produce sperm and eggs is adjusted, the modified germ line passes down to the next generation with the genetic modification. CRISPER is controversial as other genetic engineering techniques are. Today, I wanted to put my opinion aside and would like to research about this technique. The video shows different usages of the CRISPR technique.
